I'm afraid if I hold just the handle it might come off. My lab pup can pull hard when another dog around. But there is a latch to put A hook on for a more sturdy handle if it does. The chain itself is beautiful. Light enough, not too thick looks good. I don't have to worry about my dog being quiet ( chewing the leash) in the backseat anymore.
